Most Patek Philippe Calatrava dress watches of the 1950s came in refined, compact sizes. The Ref.2481 we feature today measures approximately 37 mm across the case — a rare King Size for its period. What makes it even more exceptional is its beautifully aged grand feu enamel dial, imbued with rich patina from decades past.

Grand feu enamel is a highly intricate dial-making technique of the era. The enamel compound undergoes repeated high-temperature firing and cooling, followed by meticulous polishing; the process demands masterful control over heat and craftsmanship. After more than six decades, the dial of this Ref.2481 has matured into a soft, creamy warm tone. Paired with its commanding 37 mm case, it fully embodies the timeless charm of vintage grand feu enamel. Owing to its labour-intensive workflow and prohibitive production cost, this traditional craft gradually fell out of use by the mid 20th century, elevating the collectible value of this well-preserved vintage enamel dial.

The case design of the Ref.2481 is equally distinctive. Its stepped lugs feature sharply defined facets that create striking light and shadow contrast, lending architectural depth to this otherwise minimalist round dress watch. Sculpted, stylised lugs like these are hallmarks of high-end dress watch design from the 1950s, showcasing fine artistry. The bezel gently recesses inward to complement the stepped lugs, sharpening the watch’s contours and three-dimensional presence.

Powering the Ref.2481 is Patek Philippe’s manual-wind Cal.27 SC movement. Launched in 1949, it was the brand’s first manually wound movement engineered specifically for centre seconds, succeeding the earlier Cal.12 120SC developed in partnership with Victorin Piguet. The Cal.27SC was widely fitted inside iconic Patek Philippe Calatrava watches throughout the 1950s.
