The Portugieser is one of IWC’s most iconic collections, renowned for its maritime roots and oversized proportions. Yet in the late 1990s, IWC took an unexpected turn with the Ref. 3531—a 35mm Portugieser affectionately known among collectors as the “Little Portugieser,” and perhaps the least Portugieser-like Portugieser ever made.
Produced during the golden era when IWC and Jaeger-LeCoultre shared the same German parent company, the Ref. 3531 is exceptionally rare. According to collector research, fewer than 1,000 stainless steel examples were made, while the white-dial steel version is believed to number under 700 pieces.
Its ivory-white dial embodies understated elegance. The classic small-seconds layout at six o’clock is complemented by the Portugieser’s signature Arabic numerals and slender feuille hands, creating a design that feels both timeless and effortlessly refined. The vintage-style “International Watch Co.” signature further echoes the earliest Portugieser watches.
Turning the watch over reveals one of its greatest attractions: the Jaeger-LeCoultre Cal. 891/2 automatic movement. Slim, beautifully engineered, and finished to IWC’s exacting standards, it perfectly suits the watch’s elegant proportions while offering a fascinating glimpse into a remarkable chapter of watchmaking history.
