introduced in the early 1920s, the Prince quickly earned the nickname “the doctor’s watch.” This reputation stemmed from its distinctive dial layout: a vertically divided design with hours and minutes displayed on the upper section, and an oversized subsidiary seconds dial below. The enlarged seconds register—nearly equal in visual weight to the main dial—allowed for precise, at-a-glance reading of the seconds hand.
In an era before modern medical instruments became widespread, this configuration proved especially useful for physicians measuring pulse rates, making it a favorite among the medical community. Since then, this top-and-bottom dial architecture has remained the most recognizable signature of the Prince line.
This Cellini Prince Ref. 5443 represents Rolex’s mid-2000s reinterpretation of the Prince. In today’s world, wristwatches are no longer required to serve as clinical timing tools, and the dial has evolved accordingly—from a purely functional design of the 1920s to a more expressive, contemporary aesthetic.
The upper dial retains only three Arabic numerals at 3, 6, and 9, while the lower seconds dial abandons numerals entirely, leaving only markers and hands. Radiating guilloché patterns expand outward from the center, creating striking visual depth.
In terms of color, Ref. 5443 embraces a cool, modern tone: black and silver form a restrained yet dramatic foundation, layered with a sense of depth and contrast. Within both the upper and lower display sections, subtle dark red rectangular accents introduce rhythm and dynamism, adding a contemporary design edge.
On the movement side, this Ref. 5443 features an exhibition caseback—an extremely rare design choice for Rolex. Through the sapphire crystal, one can directly admire the manually wound Cal. 7040, developed by Rolex specifically for this series.
