When speaking of the Cartier Santos, most immediately envision its iconic square silhouette. The example presented here, however, belongs to a far rarer and lesser-known expression of the Santos family—a softened, rounded interpretation.
Though often described as a “round” Santos, it is distinctly different from the pure circularity of the Ballon Bleu. A closer look reveals a subtle dialogue between square and circle. The lateral sides of the case have been fully rounded and visually absorbed, while at the 12 and 6 o’clock positions, slightly straighter transitions remain—quiet echoes of the original square Santos design. With the circular dial commanding the visual center, the watch presents itself as gentle and composed, far removed from the block-like impression typically associated with the Santos name.
Despite its uncommon form, this is unmistakably a true Santos by blood. Eight round screws are evenly set into the bezel, while each bracelet link is secured by a pair of exposed polished screws. This industrial aesthetic is unmistakably Santos DNA—after all, it remains Cartier’s only core collection to extensively employ exposed screws as a defining decorative element.
The Ref. 1920-1 measures 36 mm in diameter (including the crown) and is fitted with its original stainless steel bracelet. The dial follows Cartier’s classical visual language: Roman numerals, a chemin-de-fer minute track, and a date aperture at three o’clock establish a calm and legible rhythm. The crown is set with a blue spinel cabochon, and the watch is powered by an automatic movement.
Offered on consignment from a private owner, this piece has been authenticated by our atelier. Overall condition is excellent, with the movement running well and all functions operating properly.
Square and round have never truly been opposites. In this Santos of heaven and earth, structure meets softness—accompanying its wearer with balance, restraint, and quiet confidence, moving through the world with both resolve and grace.
