Throughout the long history of Swiss watchmaking, the creation of hardstone dials has always represented one of the most demanding artisanal challenges. Natural stone must be cut and polished to a thickness of under 0.5 mm, then precisely mounted atop an ultra-thin movement—an undertaking that allows virtually no margin for error in structure or execution. As a result, such dials have always been produced in extremely limited numbers.
Yet in the 1970s and 1980s, Piaget astonished the watchmaking world by transforming these gemstones into icons of modern horology. Lapis lazuli, tiger’s eye, malachite—materials once reserved for high jewellery—were reimagined through watchmaking craftsmanship, becoming some of the most recognizable and celebrated visual signatures in Piaget’s history. This period remains one of the maison’s most luminous chapters of aesthetic innovation.
The Piaget Ref. 9021 presented here was born in this golden era. It is powered by the legendary ultra-thin manual-winding caliber 9P, whose remarkably slender 2 mm profile supports a full natural lapis lazuli dial—an eloquent testament to Piaget’s mastery of both ultra-thin engineering and refined design.
Its distinction, however, extends even further. Beyond the serene depth of the lapis lazuli dial, this watch is fitted with a Clous de Paris bezel. The quiet, mineral stillness of the stone contrasts beautifully with the sharp, faceted geometry of the hobnail pattern, creating a dynamic visual tension. Such a configuration is exceptionally rare, even among Piaget’s hardstone creations.
Inspired by medieval European architectural motifs, the Clous de Paris pattern appears from afar as rows of miniature pyramidal peaks, while up close revealing a dense, light-reflective geometric matrix. Incorporating such a precision-demanding decorative technique—on top of a hardstone dial and an ultra-thin construction—elevates the technical complexity far beyond that of conventional designs.
This Ref. 9021 stands as one of Piaget’s rare moments of daring experimentation—a subtle yet confident deviation from the expected. For collectors, it represents both a pinnacle of craftsmanship and a singular aesthetic statement. It invites us to look back upon a golden age when creative boundaries were fluid and exploration was embraced without restraint.
This Piaget Ref. 9021 is currently available in our workshop. The lapis lazuli dial and case are preserved in excellent overall condition. The movement has been fully serviced by Nicky Sir and is running well. The watch is offered with a one-year in-house service warranty.
